Weather for Outings: When is the best time to be outside?
The decision of when to go on an outing depends heavily on the weather. The "perfect" time is a combination of temperature, sunshine, risk of rain, and the nature of your activity. Our app helps you find this window of opportunity.
The Hourly Forecast is Your Best Friend
For precise planning, the hourly forecast is crucial. Instead of just asking, "Will it rain today?", it's better to ask, "When will it rain today?"
- Finding the dry window: Even on a day with a 60% chance of rain, there might be a 4-hour dry spell in the afternoon. The hourly view shows you exactly when you should plan your hike or walk.
- Avoiding the heat: On a hot summer day, a bike ride at 2 PM might be unpleasant. The hourly forecast shows you that the temperatures in the morning or late afternoon are much more comfortable.
- Catching the sunrise/sunset: Our app shows you the exact times for sunrise and sunset. Combined with the hourly cloud forecast, you can estimate whether an early start is worth it for a spectacular photo.
Ideal Conditions for Different Activities
Hiking:
Ideal temperatures are between 15°C and 22°C with light cloud cover. Full sun can be exhausting on long stretches. Pay attention to the wind forecast in the mountains, as strong wind can significantly lower the feels-like temperature.
Cycling:
Similar to hiking, mild, dry conditions are best. A strong headwind can make a tour grueling. Check the wind direction in the app to possibly plan your route to have the wind at your back.
Picnic or Beer Garden:
Sunshine is the key factor here. But wind speed is also important—strong winds can send napkins flying and quickly become uncomfortable. Look for a window of time with low wind and a low probability of rain.
The "Activities" Index in Our App
To make it even easier for you, we've integrated an "Activities" index on the "Today" page. It summarizes temperature, wind, rain, and sunshine to give you a quick rating from "Ideal" to "Risky." For detailed planning, however, you should always take a look at the hourly development to make the most of your day outdoors.
