"How warm is it today?" – More than just a number

The question about today's temperature is one of the most common weather-related queries. However, the pure number on the thermometer only tells half the story. To truly know how the weather feels and how you should dress, you need to understand the concept of the "feels-like temperature."

The Difference: Temperature vs. Feels-Like Temperature

The temperature given in a weather forecast is a physical measurement. It is standardized to be measured in the shade at a height of two meters to avoid direct solar radiation.

The feels-like temperature, on the other hand, is a calculated value that describes how an average person perceives the temperature. It takes into account two crucial factors that massively influence our perception of temperature:

  • Wind (Wind Chill Effect): Wind blows away the thin, warming layer of air directly above our skin. This causes the body to cool down faster. On a day with 5°C (41°F) and strong wind, the temperature can therefore feel like -1°C (30°F).
  • Humidity (Heat Index): In the heat, our body cools itself by evaporating sweat. If the humidity is high, however, sweat cannot evaporate as effectively. The cooling effect diminishes, and the heat feels more oppressive and hotter than it actually is.

Rule of thumb: Always base your clothing choice on the feels-like temperature, not the pure air temperature!

What the Temperatures Mean for Your Day

  • Below 0°C (32°F): Risk of frost. Warm winter clothing is a must (thick coat, hat, scarf, gloves). Be aware of the risk of slippery roads and paths.
  • 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F): Cool weather. A winter or thick transitional jacket, a sweater, and closed shoes are necessary. The layering principle is ideal.
  • 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F): Mild transitional weather. A light jacket or a thick sweater is often sufficient. However, it can still be quite cool in the morning and evening.
  • 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F): Pleasantly warm. T-shirt weather! A light sweater or cardigan is advisable for the evening or shady spots.
  • Above 25°C (77°F): Hot. Light, airy clothing is called for. Remember sun protection and drink enough water. Avoid the midday heat for strenuous activities.
