Aachen: Imperial Weather with an Atlantic Touch
Aachen's weather, situated on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands, is heavily influenced by the Atlantic, giving it a temperate but often unpredictable character. The locals, or 'Aachener', are well-acquainted with their grey skies and the frequent drizzle that lends the ancient imperial city a pensive, historic atmosphere. However, this "Aachener Schmuddelwetter" (dismal weather) is no cause for despair. Instead, it’s the perfect excuse to relax in the famous Carolus Thermen hot springs or enjoy a hot chocolate in one of the many cozy cafés in the old town.
When the sun does break through, the city comes alive. Locals flock to the market square, enjoy ice cream in front of the cathedral, and cherish the rare gift of blue skies. Summers are pleasantly warm but rarely oppressive, ideal for strolling through the ancient streets or hiking in the nearby Eifel mountains. Autumn brings a palette of colors to the surrounding forests and a crisp chill that cleanses the air. Aachen's weather may not always be perfect, but it shapes the calm, resilient character of the city and its people.
